Stereo/SOHO/Ulysses-particle meeting (06.10.2008 - 08.10.2008)

On October 6, Ulysses was launched. Until recently it has provided us with a wealth of data. Five years later SOHO and 16 years later the two STEREO spacecraft joined in. On these space probes we have energetic particle instruments measuring the flux of energetic particles in the energy range from a few 10 keV to several 10 MeV. During the last fast latitude scan of Ulysses all instruments were operational and allowed a unique three dimensional view of the energetic particle distribution. In order to analyze these data, intercalibration between instruments is needed. Also an important topic is how can be the scientific community be “motivated” in using the data. This is the goal of our meeting in Kiel from 6. – 8. October 2008.

Suggested Periods driven by STEREO observations
January 23,24, 2007: Three small solar electron events (impulsive). The last event shows also proton increase.
March 15, 2007: There is a small solar electron event observed by EPHIN however in SEPT it is masked by CIR-proton contamination.
May 19,23, 2007: SEP events. Electron and protons, CME, flare, Type II....Mixed with two CIR ion events.
July 2007: Two small solar electron events during this month
July-Aug-Sep 2007: CIR observations with Ulysses in the ecliptic plane.
Sep 13,14 2007: Two nice distant upstream events in STEREO-A, located at radial distance of 0.3 AU from the Earth!.  Smooth magnetic field.
Early Oct 2007 and early Nov 2007.: Clear Proton increases in the 4 MeV range (EPHIN) with no counterpart in SEPT at ~400 keV. They look like CIR. Background problem??. Interesting to look ERNE data to cover the 1-3 MeV range
End of Dec 2007: CIR particle event suddenly missing in this rotation. The High speed stream is there but not the particles. Probably no compression because the wind before the stream is not slow enough. ??? The event is there in the previous and following rotation.
2007-2008.: Smooth, recurrent, several-day long increases in the electron intensities, particularly in the lower energy channels. Proton contamination? Likely to be Jovian, but interesting to discuss if some of them are CIR-electrons. Two of them appear in Oct. and Nov. 2007, well before the optimal Jovian connection.
Apr 5, 2008: SEP event. P velocity dispersion. STEREO A
Apr 26, 2008: SEP event. Nice p velocity dispersion in STEREO B. Only a few electrons. EIT wave, flare, CME
May 11, 2008: Looks like a magnetic cloud in STEREO A, some low energy protons before and after the cloud
Quiet time periods tbd
