Extraterrestrial Physics has existed as an independent department at the Kiel University since 1962. The department belongs to the Institute for Experimental and Applied Physics and offers a complete spectrum of courses.
We work in three research groups on a wide variety of topics in space research. Additionally, we participate in several missions from ESA and NASA.

The NASA probe Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) is going to land on our neighbour planet within just seven minutes. It has been travelling to Mars for eight months at a speed of about 21,000 km/h. Curiosity is going to land on our neighbour planet on August 6, 7:31 AM. The precisely planned landing sequence is going to use new techniques to land the Mars rover on the surface at about the speed of a pedestrian. On board of the probe is an instrument from Kiel, the Radiation Assessment Detector. We invite you to experience the landing live with us, the scientists working on the project, in the Max Planck lecture hall of the Institute for Experimental and Applied Physics. The event starts at 6:30 AM.

"Experiment from University of Kiel approved for Bexus balloon flight campaign"
The department of Extraterrestrial Physics is participating in this year's Bexus balloon flight campaign. As part of the student programme Rexus/Bexus, coordinated by the German space agency DLR and the Swedish National Space Board SNSB, it is planned to measure the altitude-dependency of the radiation exposure in the atmosphere. A detector system, developed in Kiel, will measure the radiation exposure during a balloon flight up to an altitude of 35 km. The launch will take place in the first week of October 2010 in Kiruna in the north of Sweden.

Finally the time has come: After several delays, the NASA’s STEREO mission has launched into space from Cape Canaveral during the night from Wednesday to Thursday (25-10-06). The Solar TErrestial Relations Observatory will take the first 3D pictures of solar eruptions that will allow the exact position and speed of these coronal mass ejections to be measured
