Further analysis of the 28 March 1976 event has been carried out using
the focused transport model, with a Parker spiral interplanetary magnetic field.
Fitting the observed pitch-angle distributions has yielded the following
conclusions.
(1) At helioradius r approximately equal to or less than
0.6 AU, scattering is very weak for both 5 MeV protons (mean free
path, 2.3 AU) and 0.5 MeV electrons (mean free path, 1.4 AU).
(2) There is a shell of enhanced proton scattering (mean free path, 0.4 AU)
centered around 1 AU.
(3) The pitch diffusion coefficient has a broad minimum centered around
90° pitch angle.
(4) For 5 MeV protons, the mean free path increases rapidly beyond a
helioradius of about 1.3 AU.
